In 1969, Angus met 15-year-old Larry Van Kriedt, an accomplished guitarist himself, who had moved to Sydney from San Francisco. Van Kriedt soon found that Angus was rarely alone. Larry Van Kriedt: ‘He had kind of a gang of friends around him, you know, and they were kind of like the tough guys. Angus was the ring leader! He was the smallest one. They were in their school uniforms, and smoking cigarettes. ‘Sometimes people might pick on me a bit — I was very quiet. And Angus, even though he was half my size, he used to go, “You leave him alone!
The guy’s about six foot and Angus is five foot tall, it was like the weirdest sight. He introduced himself as Angus Young, brother of George Young from The Easybeats, and also the brother of Malcolm Young. I obviously heard of Malcolm because of the Velvet Underground thing. They were playing lots of sort of heavy guitar-based music rather than songs with lyrics that much. ’ The downsized band continued with Sneddon on vocals and guitar under the new name of Tantrum. The band’s work schedule slowly began to expand to include places like Blacktown RSL in western Sydney and the Coogee Oceanic in the city’s eastern suburbs.
He got into trouble quite a lot and he attracted a “gang” culture around him in a schoolboy sense. ’ Angus was very keen to get a Gibson guitar. When a friend of Van Kriedt’s mentioned that Van Kriedt had one, Angus looked him up and down contemptuously. ” Then I thought I was gonna have all these kids in my room and I was a bit worried and I said, “Well, you can come in, but I can’t have all these people in there, you know,” so he said, “Alright”. He kept them all under control. ’ Impressed that Van Kriedt not only owned the guitar of his dreams but also had a Gibson guitar catalogue, Angus and Van Kriedt began to hang out together listening to records and exchanging guitar techniques.
